Largest pink diamond in 300 years discovered in Angola, company says

A big, pink diamond of 170 carats has been discovered in Angola and is claimed to be the largest such gemstone found in 300 years.

Named the “Lulo Rose,” the diamond was found at the Lulo alluvial diamond mine, the mine’s owner, the Lucapa Diamond Company, announced Wednesday on its website.

“Only one in 10,000 diamonds is coloured pink. So you’re certainly looking at a very rare article when you find a very large pink diamond,” Lucapa CEO Stephen Wetherall told The Associated Press.

The pink gemstone is expected to fetch a high value when auctioned, but Wetherall said he doesn’t know what kind of premium will be paid because of its colour.

Mine has history of large discoveries

Lulo is an alluvial mine which means the stones are recovered from a river bed. The Lucapa company is searching for underground deposits, known as kimberlite pipes, which would be the main source of the diamonds, said Wetherall, speaking from the company’s headquarters in Australia.

“We’re looking for the kimberlite pipes that brought these diamonds to the surface,” Wetherall said. “When you find these high-value large diamonds … it certainly elevates the excitement from our perspective in our hunt for the primary source.”

About 400 staff are employed at the Lulo mine, which has already produced the two largest diamonds ever found in Angola, including a 404-carat clear diamond, he said.

The pink gemstone is the fifth largest diamond found at the mine where 27 diamonds of 100 carats or more have been found, according to Lucapa.

The pink diamond will be sold by international tender by the Angolan state diamond marketing company, Sodiam. Angola’s mines make it one of the world’s top 10 producers of diamonds.

Texas pet grooming salons report rash of break-ins

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A string of break-ins at pet grooming salons over the past few weeks has some local business owners banding together.

KXAN spoke to owners who have shared surveillance videos of at least seven break-ins at their facilities between the end of June and the end of July.

So far, owners have confirmed the following break-ins, all occurring in the overnight hours. All but two have records with Austin Police Department online:

  • June 27: Mod Mutt Salon
  • July 2: Rainbow Paws Pet Salon
  • July 4: As the Fur Flies
  • July 11: Sniff Grooming Studio
  • July 23: Hair O’ the Dog Pet Salon
  • July 26: Barkin’ Creek Dog Kitchen & Bath- Zilker
  • July 29: Barkin’ Creek Dog Kitchen & Bath- South Lamar

“It’s sad,” said Eliana Thormann, who owns Mod Mutt Salon, which was broken into on June 27. “It’s not just the cash register that’s taken. It’s the emotional, you know, like how violated you feel.”

“You provide that business just to other people, you know, all the dog lovers, and then someone just take[s] advantage of you,” Thormann said.

She also owns Sniff Grooming Studio, which she said was broken into on July 11.

She said they didn’t have a lot of cash — about $600 total from both locations, but are also out a couple thousand dollars to pay for repairs out-of-pocket, since their deductible would’ve been higher.

“The whole ordeal, you know, rescheduling clients, vacuuming all the glass, you know, shattered on the ground. The dogs can’t walk through it safely,” Thormann said.

She said they hadn’t fully recovered from the pandemic at Sniff, and had decided to slowly shut that location down. But the break-in sped up their timeline.

“We just decided to close the shop

How The Adidas Samba Sneaker Became Fashion’s New Favorite Shoe (Again)

style=”max-height: 1024px”

The samba” data-ylk=”slk:Adidas Samba sneaker” class=”link “Adidas Samba sneaker is by no means novel. First designed in the 1940s as a adidas.com/us/women-soccer-cleats” data-ylk=”slk:soccer shoe” class=”link “soccer shoe (or, rather, football, since it was created in Germany), the sneaker — a minimal style featuring a rubber sole and the brand’s signature three stripes and often constructed of a mix of leather and suede — spent over 70 years sitting amongst the athletic brand’s lineup of beloved sneakers which also include Superstars and Stan Smiths. But over the last year, and most noticeably the last few months, the Samba has emerged as the Sneaker of the Moment, preferred by trendsetters like Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Frank Ocean.

“We’ve seen a noticeable uptick in both supply and demand for the Samba,” confirms Aniza Lall, SVP of commercial at Stadium Goods, where sales of the sports shoe have increased over 600% since June.

While it’s a stark rise for a sneaker that’s been around for decades, it’s not entirely surprising: Thanks to a number of high-profile collabs including Jonah Hill, skateboarder Jason Dill, and, most notably, menswear designer Grace Wales Bonner, the Samba is now available in more eye-catching iterations that are drawing in both men and women seeking the next It shoe. According to shopping app Lyst’s newest quarterly report, Adidas has risen four spots in the “hottest brand rankings,” to 13th place. With, according to the report, “the Adidas x Wales Bonner Samba sneakers topping the men’s hottest products list.”

“The Grace Wales Bonner collab is one of the most special [collaborations],” says Lall. “Mixing the world of high fashion with the [European] football roots of the shoe.” On resale sites, Sambas from the debut collaboration are listed for close to $1,000

Kate Middleton Didn’t Wear Her Engagement Ring and the Internet Is Freaking Out

When your engagement ring happens to be one of most iconic rings ever made, it’s no wonder the world keeps a close eye on it at all times.

That’s exactly why the internet was aflutter this week after Kate Middleton stepped out at the Commonwealth Games with hubby Prince William and Princess Charlotte, too. Sure, she was dressed to the nines in a white Alexander McQueen suit, but her ring finger was noticeably less blingy, adorned with only her gold wedding band vs. the sapphire and diamond sparkler that once belonged to Princess Diana and was passed down to her upon her engagement to William in 2010.

So, where was the ring? My co-host Roberta Fiorito and I discuss a zillion reasons for its absence on this week’s episode of the Royally Obsessed podcast (listen to it here!). No, it has nothing to do with marital troubles. Our main take: It was likely getting cleaned or had a stone in need of repair. But also, Kate has only been pictured without it a handful of times (for example, on this kate-middleton-didnt-wear-her-engagement-ring-during-todays-hospital-visit/” data-ylk=”slk:hospital visit in 2020″ class=”link “hospital visit in 2020 and engagement-ring-today/” data-ylk=”slk:again in 2018″ class=”link “again in 2018), which is why it always makes headlines when she’s pictured without it on.

On the flip side, Kate’s engagement ring was the subject of recent conversations for a very different reason: The risk she took while ring-scuba-diving” data-ylk=”slk:wearing it scuba diving in Belize during her royal tour of the Caribbean” class=”link “wearing it scuba diving in Belize during her royal tour of the Caribbean with Prince William. (For the record, the value of the ring is currently set at approximately half a million dollars.)

We’re all in a Barbie world: The rise of Barbiecore

ndall Becker, a former trend forecaster for Bloomingdale’s, explained that, “Initially, Barbiecore was about coming out of the pandemic. There was an emphasis on party dressing, night dressing, and owning your sexuality [but it has since] spilled into workplace culture and street style with pink power suits. It’s about owning your look. You’re feeling great and you’re feeling empowered.”

Hot pink and shocking fuschia are so in demand that the trend is influencing all sorts of products, from beauty to fashion and even interior design. A clear example would be Valentino’s collection for autumn 2022 in the northern hemisphere, which was centred entirely around pink. Since then, a multitude of celebrities, even men, have been seen wearing head-to-toe pink looks in the media.

So why is pink so popular again and why are consumers buying into it right now?

A declaration of über-femininity

Barbiecore videos began to flood our TikTok feeds back in April and have since garnered more than 13 million views, while the #barbie count has topped 22 billion. However, the first images of Margot Robbie as Barbie were what caused the real frenzy on social media. The movie’s teaser trailer was soon followed by leaked images of Robbie and co-star Gosling in Barbie’s famous ’80s rollerblading outfit, which prompted a trend of people trying to re-create the look.

Pinterest head of fashion Jessica Payne said there has been a huge interest in Barbiecore on the platform this year. Searches for ‘Barbie outfits’ have increased 75 per cent, while ‘pink eyeshadow’ has gone up by 30 per cent and ‘pink lipsticks’ by 60 per cent. Searches for blonde, blown-out hair styles are up 80 per cent.

“We’ve noticed fashionistas on Pinterest look to the iconic blue leg warmers and platinum blonde updos to replicate their own Barbie

This Retro Shoe Trend Will Be Everywhere in Spring 2023

Dozens of footwear brands unveiled their spring ’23 collections this week at the Atlanta Apparel trade event, revealing the upcoming fashion and comfort looks for women and kids.

And one particular shoe trend towered above the rest. Retro ’70s-inspired platforms were a top item for many of the brands showing at the AmericasMart complex in downtown Atlanta.

More from Footwear News

The platform silhouette has been a growing trend in recent seasons, but is now reaching new heights — literally. Styles on display for spring ’23 adopted extra-tall platform soles and even taller heels.

In many cases, the platform silhouette was combined with the ever-popular slide upper, though updated with embellishments or bold colors. At Shu Shop, for instance, the brand offered a stacked-bottom version adorned with chunky gold hardware for a touch of sophistication.

And at Seychelles, a women’s brand known for its vintage aesthetic, the label embraced not only an oversized ’70s platform styling but the era’s quintessential orange coloring. The result is a brazen look that will command attention and bring a colorful note to any outfit.

Other brands combined the platform silhouette with other key trend stories for spring ’23.

At Corky’s, for instance, the brand picked up on the hiker vibe that has been percolating in the market for a couple of seasons, adding a lug sole to the bottom of its wood-bottom platform slides. The rugged outsole has a modernizing effect on the retro sandal but is also practical, by adding stability for women on the go.

Meanwhile, a focus on natural materials was front and center at Blowfish Malibu and Matisse.

This 170-Carat Pink Diamond May Be the Largest Found in the Past 300 Years

It’s rare to discover a pink diamond, let alone the biggest one in three centuries.

Australian miner Lucapa Diamond Company has unearthed a 170-carat pink diamond that it claims is the largest such stone found in 300 years. Dubbed the “Lulo Rose,” the gem was discovered at the company’s Lulo alluvial diamond mine in the Lunda Norte region of Angola in Africa, according to a statement shared on Wednesday.

More from Robb Report

The diamond is expected to fetch in the millions at a forthcoming auction run by Angolan state diamond marketing company Sodiam. In fact, it could even eclipse the pink-star-diamond-sells-for-world-record-83-million-in-geneva-idUSBRE9AC15920131114″ data-ylk=”slk:Pink Star” class=”link “Pink Star, an internally flawless 59.6-carat pink diamond that sold for a record $83 million in 2013. (It remains the world’s most expensive pink diamond.) Lucapa’s managing director Stephen Wetherall has not provided an estimate of Lulo Rose’s worth as the diamond is still being examined and valued.

“This record and spectacular pink diamond recovered from Lulo continues to showcase Angola as an important player on the world stage for diamond mining and demonstrates the potential and rewards for commitment and investment in our growing diamond mining industry,” Diamantino Acevedo, Angola’s minister of mineral resources, petroleum and gas, said in a statement.

Indeed, Lulo has produced 27 gems over 100 carats to date and two of Angola’s largest diamonds. The largest discovery at the site was the whopping 404-carat “4th February Stone,” which sold for $16 million. The Lulo Rose is the

What the ED has found so far in West Bengal SSC scam

What an irony it is that at a time when the citizens of this country were busy filing the income-tax returns, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) was busy unearthing mountains of hoarded and stolen wealth from a bunch of politicians. And that list includes ousted West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee.

Partha Chatterjee is among those arrested by the ED in the West Bengal SSC scam. He and his associates are accused of irregularities in the recruitment of staff and teachers in the government-sponsored and aided schools. CBI is investigating the case while the ED is tracking the money. So far, at least Rs 50 crore in cash, gold ornaments and several properties have been seized by the ED.

Here is what the ED has found in the latest:

The ED is looking into a GST number linked to accused No 2 and Partha Chatterjee’s close associate, Arpita Mukherjee. Reportedly, there are two GST numbers, out of which one is linked to a beauty parlour business and the other is not linked to any business. ED suspects the other GST number could have been generated illegally to evade taxes.

The ED conducted raids at six locations in the case on Tuesday, August 2, 2022. The agency found a nail art studio in Patuli owned by Mukherjee. The studio was located in a building owned by a TMC councillor. The studio was sealed and the councillor was also interrogated by the agency.

Reports suggest at least three nail art studios belonging to Mukherjee were raided.
