The day after police began questioning people April 7 in an assisted living facility about the suspected theft of a $90,000, 4-carat diamond engagement ring on March 31, the ring mysteriously appeared in the room next door to the victim.

Although the ring was recovered, the police investigation will continue.

According to the police report, only a finite number of people had access to the victim’s room. Her husband verified that she was wearing the ring the day before it went missing.

Fraud: Chillicothe Road

Police are investigating an incident reported April 8, the day after a resident, 89, was scammed out of $90,000 through an online bank transfer. Further details were not available pending the investigation.

Theft: Market Place Drive

A Bedford man, 60, decided to try a scheme suggested by his friend April 6. He placed cartons of cream cheese under meat packages at Walmart’s self-checkout register so that the scanner would only charge him for the cream cheese.

His plan was foiled after loss prevention personnel saw his half-baked plan and called police.

The suspect admitted to the theft of six packages of meat valued at $283.13 and blamed it on the influence of his friend. He will appear in Chardon Municipal Court.

Theft: Market Place Drive

A middle-aged man entered the Walmart store with an empty shopping cart at 1 p.m. April 5. He pushed it directly to the electronics department, loaded it with a 48-inch flat-screen TV and proceeded to leave the store.

When a store greeter asked to see his receipt, the subject said he had brought the TV in to return it, but had forgotten his receipt, so he was taking it back home. He left with the TV in an older red SUV.

Police are reviewing video and are investigating.
