Miss Manners: My fiance wants a diamond ring, even if the stone comes from Russia

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I am very much against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and I don’t want to support it by buying a diamond engagement ring, since the stone is likely to come from Russia.

I told my fiancee I would like to buy her a ruby, emerald or sapphire ring — her choice — but she says the only ring appropriate for an engagement is a diamond. What is your advice?

GENTLE READER: This is not the jewelry department, so Miss Manners cannot advise you on how to find a diamond with a clear provenance (or a lab-created one). But that is what you must do.

The reason is not because there is any etiquette rule about diamond rings. Frankly, we don’t even care if there is a ring, much less what type. Etiquette considers that all an engagement requires is an agreement between two people to be married. It is not we who invented that bended-knee routine.

But your fiancee craves this. And your marriage will go better if you acknowledge that while a spouse’s moral convictions should be respected, so should a spouse’s emotional longings.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: If one is dining alone at a restaurant and must burp, what should one do afterwards? It seems coarse to say nothing, but it seems odd to try to engage nearby diners.

By saying “excuse me,” would one be asking the salt shaker for a pardon?

GENTLE READER: Even if dining alone, one should say “excuse me.” Especially if the people at the next table jumped.

Rhyl woman ‘can’t wait’ to open her first beauty salon in Kinmel Bay

She said: “It went absolutely incredibly; so much better than we thought it would.

“We had people pop in randomly, who had seen the newspaper article, and they booked treatments, which was great.

“Yesterday was phenomenal; again, lots of people just walked in for treatments. It was so good; the atmosphere in Saturday was electric; like something I’ve never seen before.

“Everybody was saying how beautiful the salon looked, and how well we’d done to get it ready in such a short space of time. We did it all in eight days.

“Just seeing the place full was my highlight. To take a step back and think: ‘That’s my salon; I’ve pulled it off’. It really was quite overwhelming; I didn’t want to lock up!

“It was so nice that people just came along and supported us; I can’t thank them enough for doing that.”

Maisie Williams splits from boyfriend of five years Reuben Selby | Entertainment

Maisie Williams has split from her boyfriend Reuben Selby.

The ‘Game of Thrones’ star enjoyed a five-year romance with fashion designer Reuben but she confirmed on Friday (24.02.23) the pair have parted ways with the actress calling the break-up the “end of an era” and joking they will both need some privacy for the sake of her beloved dog.

In a post on Instagram, she wrote: “The end of an era. Reuben and I have decided to end our relationship. Since we met five years ago, our connection always extended deeply into our shared, and separate, creative careers … and it will continue to do so. This decision is something we are so grateful or [sic] as we can protect the magic, that we can’t help but emit, whenever we put our brains together.”

She then added: “P.s no further questions, please, we must protect our children (my dog).”

Reuben reposted Maisie’s message on his own page alongside a heart emoji.

The pair was last pictured together in October during a trip to Paris Fashion Week in France. They made their debut as a couple in early 2019 when they were spotted holding hands as they strolled around New York City together.

In 2021, Maisie showed her devotion to Reuben by wearing an outfit he designed to the glitzy Met Gala. During the event, she told E! News: “It’s inspired by ‘The Matrix’. I have my coat and my Matrix nails. I’ve grown up on these American icons – women in film, these heroines. It shaped the woman that I became, and so it kind of made sense for me to honour those people tonight.”

Maisie and Reuben moved to the countryside in 2021 to settle in a quiet part of West Sussex, and in an interview last year the
